Legislation
Several laws passed since Latvian independence in 1991 dictate access to Foreign Affairs archives. The diplomatic historical archives (1918 - 1990) are accessible to national and foreign researchers at the Latvia State Historical Archives. Latvian researchers may request access to post 1990 documents housed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Archives. Foreign researchers may not access the documents of the Ministry.

Procedures
Today all archives of the Ministry and legations from 1918 to 1990 are kept in the Latvian State Historical Archives. Researchers must present a letter of introduction from their institution or university.
