Public archival material created during the period of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia up until the year 1991, including confidential documents, is available to the public, with the exception of material containing personal data and data relating to the privacy of an individual. Material created after 1991 becomes available after 30 years.

Procedures
The Archives of the Republic of Slovenia hold records created before 1991. Post- 1991 records are found at the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There is a reading room at the National Archives and members of the public may gain access with a picture ID. For the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, researchers must send advance notification of their arrival with an explanation of the reason for wanting access in order to obtain consent by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
