Mr. Hale to Mr. Seward

No. 30.]

Sir: I have the honor to report that the religious services commemorative of the death of the late President, mentioned at the close of my despatch No. 26, took place as proposed on the 1st instant, the day appointed by the President’s proclamation. It was conducted by the Reverend Messrs. Watson and Currie, the American missionaries. The service was largely attended, and the impressive discourse by the Rev. Mr. Currie upon the life and services of our late beloved President received an earnest and thoughtful attention.

I have the honor to be, sir, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

CHARLES HALE.

Hon. William H. Seward, Secretary of State.
