Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of date 31st July last, and also of the annexes which have relation to the affair of the merchant vessel the Sonora.

I will hasten, sir, to communicate the claim of Mr. Clavel to the competent Mexican authorities, and to testify to them the interest which the government of the United States takes in the adjustment of this affair.
