No. 534.
Mr. Schuyler to Mr. Fish.

No. 19.]

Sir: I have the honor to inform you that yesterday, in the Winter Palace, the marriage was solemnized, according both to the Russian orthodox and Lutheran rites, of His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrevitch, the second son of the Emperor, with the Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, eldest daughterof the reigning grand duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The diplomatic body was present at the ceremony, by ukase of the Emperor. The bride will take the title of Her Imperial Highness the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. The Grand Duchess will retain the Lutheran religion. This is worthy of note, as hitherto the Russian laws have required the wives of all grand dukes to adopt the orthodox Russian faith.

I have, &c,

EUGENE SCHUYLER
