Sir: Yesterday I gave a large dinner in honor of General Grant, to which were invited the cabinet ministers, the heads of the different parties, [Page 370] the admiral and commanding officers of our fleet, the commanders of all the other vessels of war in the harbor, including the German, French, Italian, and English; and other distinguished persons.

The dinner was followed by a large reception. The previous day I gave a dinner to General Grant which was attended by the court and the diplomatic body.
