(Mr. Leishman reports that, in the absence of any further communication from the palace about the audience, he attended Selamnik [Page 823] this morning, and that the grand master of ceremonies informed him that on account of important visits in the harem His Majesty could not receive him to-day. In view of the fact that the audience was demanded in the name of the President and that he has been twice put off, it seems to Mr. Leishman to be beneath the dignity of the Government of the United States to have him go again to the palace to seek an audience unless positive assurance be given in advance that he will be received by the Sultan.
