Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your No. 1713, of the 5th instant, reporting that as an evidence of their appreciation of the good offices exercised by you in their behalf a delegation of Syrians had extended to you and to the officers of the Brooklyn an invitation to attend a reception, which invitation was declined both by you and by the officers of the Brooklyn.

The Department approves your action in declining to attend such a reception.
