The Chargé in the Netherlands ( Langhorne) to the Secretary of State

[Telegram]

906. The Minister for Foreign Affairs informed me in a conversation to-day that a great deal of uneasiness is being expressed [Page 1118] in Holland in connection with the reports regarding the possibility that the United States will place an embargo on the shipment of foodstuffs to neutral countries adjacent to Germany. He stated that he has been approached by members of the Netherlands Government with a view to taking up this question with the Government of the United States but that he invariably replied that he did not consider this step necessary as he had entire confidence in the assurances given to the Dutch Minister at Washington by the President in a recent interview.

An official statement of this interview was given by the Foreign Office to the Dutch press on April 23 and was reported to the Department in my despatch No. 918 April 27.
