Memorandum by the Secretary of State of a Conversation With the Italian Ambassador (De Martino)

During the call today of the Italian Ambassador he brought up the question of the customs union. I told him that I had had nothing [Page 571] to say on that subject and neither had the Department of Commerce and that reports to the contrary were inaccurate. He said he understood that. He further stated that Italy had been inclined to favor it but that was merely tentative.
