The Ambassador in Chile ( Culbertson ) to the Acting Secretary of State

106. Sharp fighting in Talcahuano but Government is now in complete control there. Rebels have surrendered in Valparaiso and Government is concentrating its efforts on Coquimbo. Prohibition placed on transmission of news by cable and telegram. Chief communistic leaders in Santiago have been arrested, city quiet but streetcar strike continues. Situation in Iquique threatening but up to the present no disorders in nitrate fields and copper mines. Large supplies of American-owned fuel oil at Chanaral, Antofagasta, and Tocopilla will probably be principal objective of the fleet. The Government promises to make every effort to give protection but admits difficulty.
