The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Spain (Hayes)

277. Your 306, January 31, 9 p.m. As indicated in an earlier telegram we have asked OWI51 to call a halt to any broadcasting involving apparent attacks on Spain. We are so informing London and requesting that the Embassy bring this matter to the attention of the British in order that our action may support Hoare’s representations to London referred to in your 306. In discussing this whole question with Jordana you can inform him that we have endeavored in this way to meet one of his outstanding complaints and that we are just as [Page 318] anxious as he to take our existing differences out of the field of radio and press. Having taken steps to meet Jordana in the matter of publicity the atmosphere should be cleared for immediate discussions looking to some mutually acceptable understanding.
