The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in France (Caffery)

1947. It is understood that General Eisenhower has requested the French military authorities to instruct General Doyen15 to coordinate the withdrawal of his troops into France with the arrival of American troops on the Italian border. When obtaining confirmation from SHAEF that General Eisenhower has made this request you should make similar representations to the French Government referring to the situation described in Rome’s telegram of May 616 repeated to you as 77 and if necessary recalling the recent assurances given you by General de Gaulle.
