Referring accusations Argentina charging exorbitant prices wheat, Miranda stated to Corn Mission and repeated US immediately afterwards during courtesy call, Argentina would be glad sell wheat at world market price provided it could purchase equipment and material in United States at same prices any American citizen could buy similar products from manufacturer. Miranda explained Argentina frequently forced buy through two or more middlemen and sometimes paid “blackmarket” prices. Ray37 and I have given much thought this problem and some weeks ago requested Miranda in presence [Page 312] President Perón furnish us list supplies, equipment, et cetera, needed. We reminded him yesterday no such list received. He said it would be forthcoming immediately. Our conversations with Miranda made known to local press yesterday. Miranda’s statement appears have substance and fact and it is hoped Dept will give serious consideration possibilities remedying situation as this most important in connection Argentina’s cooperation Marshall plan and participation IEFC.
