130. Embtel 188, March 13. Contract for aircraft now in Chile scheduled for sale to Chile under interim program not yet signed. Neither State nor War Dept. wishes encourage Chile purchase aircraft which it cannot afford to maintain, and decision of course rests with Chilean Govt. B–25’s were, however, sent to Chile at specific and urgent request Chilean Air Attaché here, and only recently Chilean Amb wrote letter confirming desire Chilean Govt purchase all interim aircraft now in Chile plus 8 AT–11’s and 4 C–47’s. Decision by Chile not to buy B–25’s would probably require their return to US by Army.
