Lieutenant Governor Hamley to C. M. Allen, Esq., U. S. C.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge your communication of yesterday, conveying to me the shocking intelligence of the death, by assassination, of the President of the United States of America. Believe that I am deeply sensible of the magnitude of the loss which the people of the United States have sustained, and that I have read with interest the tribute to the late President’s high qualities which this melancholy occasion has drawn from you.

I have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient servant,

W. G. HAMLEY,
Lieutenant Governor.
