No. 45.]

Sir: I have the honor to inform you that the Ono Tomogoro and Matsmoto Judayu, the commissioners recently visiting the United States, and their suite, have returned safely to their country, expressing themselves as well pleased with the manner of their reception and their entire trip.

So far as I can learn, the government is also pleased with the result of their journey, and I have no doubt it will strengthen their regards for the United States and have a lasting beneficial effect.

I have the honor to be, sir, very respectfully, your most obedient servant,

R. B. VAN VALKENBURGH.
