Barnum distributes relief without restraint at Harpoot. Statement published that I advised missionaries to leave is not true. Have not given opinion, except privately to Mr. Dwight. Such publication weakens my power to protect if they remain. No concert to enforce tranquillity by the Powers; the Sultan knows this.
