Mr. Olney to Mr. Terrell.

No. 812.]

Sir: I have received your No. 761, of the 6th instant, inclosing the minister of foreign affairs denial of complicity of Ottoman troops in the outrages at Marash.

In this denial Tewfik Pasha states that the missionaries themselves sent an address of thanks to the military commandant for the aid and protection afforded them by the Imperial troops. The Department observes that a similar statement is made in the letter of the vali of Aleppo inclosed with your No. 756, of the 4th instant.

Your letter to Mr. Lee, inquiring as to the circumstances under which the missionaries sent their “address of thanks” and requesting a copy of it, is approved.

I am, etc.,

Richard Olney.
