Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your dispatch No. 499, of the 7th ultimo, in which you confirm your telegram of the 5th [Page 218] ultimo, reporting the receipt by the consul-general at Canton of the sum of $25,000 gold paid by the Chinese Government as indemnity for the Lienchou massacre.

The dispatch has been read with interest, and your course in the matter has been approved by the department.
