1175. Sonnino has just sent me his Chief of Cabinet to say that he has talked with Premier Orlando just returned from front and that any assistance we can furnish, including contingent of troops, [Page 288] they will be grateful for. The city Bologna, strongly socialistic, has declared to-day to fight the invaders, the workmen of great Ansaldo Company have done same. I feel my duty to say I believe that an assurance on our part now that we will help Italy repulse the invasion may prove turning point of the army.
