The Commercial Adviser of the British Embassy ( Crawford) to the Counselor for the Department of State ( Polk)

My Dear Polk: With reference to our recent conversation regarding the desirability of bringing about substantial and, if possible, complete uniformity between the British statutory lists for Latin American countries and the United States enemy trading lists for those countries, I am glad to be able to acquaint you that the Foreign Office have agreed to our proposal that they should adopt the United States list for Mexico. The only omissions will consist of three firms, one of which is British and two of which were recommended some time ago by British representatives in Mexico as suitable agents for British houses in place of German firms formerly employed in that capacity.

We hope that even in the case of these three firms, an agreement will be reached in time to have the British statutory list for Mexico, which will be published on January 11, correspond exactly with yours.

I should add that British subjects are being enjoined to respect your Mexican list, with the above mentioned exceptions, from now on.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Crawford
