The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Germany (Sackett)

[Paraphrase]

98. This telegram refers to our telephone conversation. Yesterday our Embassy in Paris reported that in the session of the French Senate today the Minister of Marine intends to say that the building of the 23,000-ton cruiser which the French had originally included in their naval appropriation for this coming year will be abandoned provided that Germany will accordingly halt its construction of vessels of the Deutschland type. I trust that for their part the German Government will deem it possible to answer by abandoning such construction.
