The Ambassador in Italy (Long) to the Secretary of State

116. My telegrams numbers 112, June 9, 7 p.m., and 114, June 12, 7 p.m.14 Following communiqué published this morning:

“Since it has for some time been the desire of the Chief of the Italian Government and of the Chancellor of the Reich to know each other [Page 223] personally and to discuss the general political situation the two statesmen will meet toward the end of the week in a city of northern Italy”.

Headlines in the press this morning announce that the meeting will take place today at Villa Pisconi in Stra near Venice.

This morning’s Messaggero intimates that Mussolini’s chief preoccupation will be to pave the way for Germany’s return to the League of Nations.
