The British Ambassador (Lothian) to the Secretary of State

My Dear Mr. Secretary: In my letter of the 19th December9 I had the pleasure of expressing to you my personal appreciation of Admiral Byrd’s humane action in relieving the distress which he and the United States Antarctic Expedition found among the inhabitants of Pitcairn Island.10

I duly reported the matter to the Foreign Office and I have now been instructed to convey to you the grateful thanks of His Majesty’s Government for the kindness of Admiral Byrd and the United States Antarctic Expedition.
