The Acting Secretary of State to the Ambassador in China (Gauss)

1519. With reference to the Embassy’s despatch no. 1588 of September 174 in regard to Chinese proposal for an understanding on the question of administration of liberated areas in the Far East, the Department would be interested in learning whether this subject was discussed at the recent meeting between President Chiang and Mount-batten.5 If the Embassy is not informed, would it be feasible for it to ascertain from General Stilwell6 whether the subject was discussed and if so the nature of the discussion.
