8578. Reference Embassy’s airgram A–1225, October 9.45 Following announcement of Foreign Office was broadcast yesterday evening by BBC and appeared in today’s newspapers:

“The Polish Government have notified His Majesty’s Government that they have received reliable information that the German authorities are planning the mass execution of the inmates of the concentration camps at Oświęcim and Brzezinky (Birkenau). In these camps thousands of people from many European countries are imprisoned.

“His Majesty’s Government wish to make it clear, beyond any possibility of doubt that if this plan, or any similar plan elsewhere, is in fact carried out, they will hold responsible all those who are in any way involved, from the highest to the lowest, and in full cooperation and agreement with the Allies will spare no effort to bring them to justice.”
