Memorandum of Conversation, by the Acting Secretary of State

The Icelandic Minister, Mr. Thor Thors, called upon me this afternoon at his request to hand me the attached note16 relative to the treaty between [concerning] the Union of Iceland and Denmark. I inquired from the Minister as to the reaction of the Danish people to this action. He stated that the King of Denmark had sent a wire requesting the Icelandic Government not to take the step until after the war. He further stated that Minister Kauffmann feels this was done under pressure of the Nazis and that they feel confident that there is no question that the free Danes of the world have been happy to see the step taken and are confident that the people of Denmark will state their approval after liberation.
