73. As possible indication French China policy is comment French Ambassador in discussing Chinese request for mediation (our 61, January 8, and 62 January 9) to effect that given repercussions Indochina of Communist regime in China, French interest required supporting any regime in China resisting Communism. This was true, he said, even though eventual collapse such resistance was inevitable as France would at least gain time.
