Editorial Note

Between July 20 and 24, high-level and wide-ranging Anglo-American discussions were held in Washington by delegations led by Ambassador [Page 385] at Large Philip Jessup and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Omar Bradley for the United States and British Ambassador Sir Oliver Franks and Lord Tedder, Chairman of the British Joint Services Mission in Washington, for the United Kingdom. The talks, dealing with problems arising from or magnified by the Korean conflict, were exploratory in nature. The text of the Agreed Joint Memorandum resulting from the talks is scheduled for publication in volume III. For extracts of those portions dealing with the Far East, see volume VII, page 462. Material on the conversations and records of the individual meetings are contained in Department of State file 611.41/8–450.
