278. Editorial Note

During April and May 1957, a critical situation unfolded in the Hashernite Kingdom of Jordan as actions taken by King Hussein to purge leftist elements from the Jordanian Government precipitated large-scale demonstrations and a sharp rise in anti-Western sentiment. Documentation on United States efforts to buttress the Hussein regime, including United State appeals for Israeli restraint, is in Department of State, Central Files 684A.85, 685.00, and 785.00.
