The Ambassador in Chile (Culbertson) to the Acting Secretary of State

77. I talked this afternoon with Frodden, Chief of the Cabinet. He said emphatically that the armed forces are supporting the President, [Page 905] that the government has the situation in hand not only in Santiago but in north and south, and that the President has no intention to resign. He spoke with confidence and resolve. I submit this statement merely as the view of the government. As we spoke we could look through the windows of the Moneda upon machine guns which command the streets and upon heavily armed troops.
