Memorandum of Conversation, by the Under Secretary of State (Welles)

The British Chargé d’Affaires called this evening.

Mr. Butler stated that he had just received a telegram from his Government informing him that General Metaxas, the Greek Prime Minister, had advised the British Government that he would be quite satisfied to receive 30 planes from the British aviation forces in Egypt in substitution for the 30 P–40 planes offered by the United States Government, and that consequently the planes in the United States could be utilized by the British without any diversion.

I said to Mr. Butler that I was very glad that this arrangement had been made and that there would be no further difficulty in connection therewith.
